Ceres is the Roman goddess of grain, cultivation, motherhood, and the changing seasons.

Her daughter Proserpina was taken into the underworld, and Ceres searched for her by torchlight. In her grief, she withdrew her gifts from the earth and the fields became barren. When Proserpina was finally permitted to return, she could not remain forever. Having eaten the seeds of the pomegranate, she was bound to return to the underworld for part of each year.

And so Ceres became a goddess not only of the harvest, but of its absence and return.

In this portrait, Ceres carries both sides of her story. Wheat represents nourishment, abundance, and all that she brings forth. A torch recalls her search for her daughter through the darkness. Her brooch is a tiny pomegranate, the fruit that binds Proserpina to the underworld and sets the seasons in motion.

Ceres faces toward the future. She does not look back at what has been lost, but toward what comes next.

The Seasons of Ceres is a seal about the cycles we move through: abundance and fallowness, creation and rest, separation and return. It is a reminder that winter belongs to the story just as much as the harvest does.

What has happened cannot always be undone.
