Inspired by Empress Eugénie’s Large Bodice Bow, this seal translates imperial ornament into something intimate and usable. The original jewel was opulent, composed of diamonds and suspended tassels.
This is the first seal Kathyn Hastings designed explicitly to be painted. Pressed on its own, it reads as textured and sculptural. Touched with chrome paint, it transforms. The raised edges catch the light, the carved recesses fall into shadow, and the wax begins to resemble metal and stone rather than resin.
The effect comes from a technique I developed after studying nineteenth century tin dipped ornaments, which used negative space and reflectivity to mimic precious materials. Instead of adding bulk, this design relies on depth. A bow reimagined for the closing of a letter.
