🐝🌱🦌 — A New Rebus Penny + Your Rebus Dictionary Awaits

| THE EPISTOLARIAN |

(Dear) Epistolarian,

Behind the scenes, I’ve been quietly crafting something special for your letter-writing table: a free Rebus Dictionary to inspire your next sealed dispatch. It includes simple instructions for composing a rebus letter—those marvelous puzzles of image and meaning—as well as nearly 300 picture-word suggestions to spark your imagination. You can download it here. 📜✨

Rebus Dictionary
A love letter in code: Rebus Valentine Letter (1814), an anonymous British creation in pen, ink, and watercolor. Each image spells out a sentiment too tender for plain text. Gift of Mrs. Richard Riddell, 1981. The Met, 1981.1136.139.

In celebration of today’s new moon 🌑—a symbol of new beginnings—I’m also unveiling the latest Hastings Étui penny, and this one speaks in rebuses. Quite literally.

The Rebus Penny

The heads side features: 🐝 + 🌳 (yew) + 🦌
“Be you, dear.”

The tails side shows: 👁 + ⚓ + 🌳 + R + 💧 (well)
“I hope you are well.”

"I hope you are well" - To me, the quality of this style rebus lies in the details of the well, the masonry in particular.
"Be you, dear" - I especially love this one plain as all the details are just so pretty in plain wax. (This color is Terra Toscana)

Rebus letters are treasures of attention. They invite the reader to pause, decode, and delight in each detail—like lingering with a friend’s words, even in their absence. They turn language into artwork, and meaning into a shared game.

Only 50 of these rebus pennies exist (🎟️ 3 are reserved for the museum collection), and once they’re gone, they’re truly gone.

Also as a reminder, the first 7 come with a special letter and Bee You Journal from my friend, Sonia Pal.
