Like the number zero, beginnings present a blank slate—a realm of endless possibilities and the promise of renewal. Yet, akin to a circle, beginnings are cyclic, lacking distinct boundaries between start and finish. We find ourselves embarking on new chapters continually, without clear demarcations.

As an artist, I am currently experiencing another phase of fresh starts, a juncture tinged with hope and uncertainty. Will the world embrace my art? Can I realize my dream of dedicating myself entirely to my craft? These questions loom, intertwined with the practicality of supporting myself and my family.

When people ask me what type of artist I am and I share I'm a wax seal artist, it goes one of two ways:

First, either the person understands that artists are so multi-faceted and into the obscurity of whatever calls them that being a "wax seal artist," intent on transforming the world through power of symbolism and the beauty of letter writing, seems like a perfectly unique and resonant artistic path. This response garners curiosity, excitement and encouragement. I love this response.

Conversely, the second response, and the one I secretly dread, reflects unintentional dismissal. Phrases like "That's not a thing" or "I didn't know that's a thing" carry a subtle undertone, seemingly relegating me to the intersection of their Venn Diagram: "real artists" and "people who think they're artists." In their limited perspective, my circle seems disconnected from that of the "real artists," while overly mingling with the circle of "people with bizarre delusions of obscure grandeur."

The paradox lies in society's expectations of artists—demands that we be both unprecedentedly unique, while remaining comprehensible. We must tread a fine line between novelty and familiarity, fitting neatly within the boundaries of traditional art forms like sculpture and landscape painting.

This sentiment mirrors the essence of new beginnings—they beckon us with the allure of novelty, urging us to embark on daring adventures. Simultaneously, we seek a logical and secure path, that's as safe as it is prosperous. This inner struggle is inherent in the artistic journey.

We must remind ourselves that risk and play are inherent to adventure, and that while we invariably have doubts about ourselves and our abilities, the uncertainty of outcome make the journey a good one.

A Good Journey

Hot air balloons, with their majestic ascent into the sky, carry profound symbolism that resonates with the concept of "beginnings." The image of a hot air balloon soaring upward evokes a sense of adventure, new horizons, and the limitless possibilities that come with embarking on a new journey.

Just as a hot air balloon takes flight, it represents the initiation of a new chapter in life, filled with optimism and the anticipation of what lies ahead. The act of ascending into the sky symbolizes the willingness to embrace change, leave behind the familiar, and venture into the unknown.

Beginnings, however, are not confined to specific moments or milestones; they are constantly occurring. Just as a hot air balloon can take flight multiple times, our lives are filled with numerous beginnings and opportunities for growth. Each day brings the chance to start anew, to set intentions, and to pursue dreams.

The symbolism of the Fool card from the Tarot deck aligns beautifully with the concept of beginnings represented by hot air balloons. In the Tarot, the Fool is often depicted as a figure on the precipice of a grand journey, symbolizing the innocence, curiosity, and fearlessness that accompany new beginnings. The Fool's energy embodies a willingness to take risks, to embrace the unknown, and to trust in the unfolding path.

Similar to the Fool's leap of faith, ascending in a hot air balloon requires a certain level of trust and surrender. It invites individuals to let go of fear and embrace the adventure that lies ahead. The hot air balloon, like the Fool, encourages us to approach new beginnings with an open heart, a sense of wonder, and a willingness to be guided by the winds of destiny.
