| THE EPISTOLARIAN |
My son and his cousin climbed a rather precarious tree in the cemetery above the ocean in Santa Barbara, a beautiful setting that was unfortunately marred by the reason for our trip: attending my cousin Elliott's funeral.
While I won't delve into the details of that today, I was reminded of tree seals and this short fable.
An Aesop's Fable
“Fin Contre Fin” 🦊🐔(End against End) The fable of the rooster and the fox, a tale attributed to the ancient Greek storyteller Aesop, serves as a timeless reminder of the importance of caution in the face of persuasive arguments. There are multiple versions of this story, but they start the same way. In this story, a rooster perches safely in a tree as a fox attempts to lure him down with promises of delicious food on the ground below. Undeterred by the rooster's initial resistance, the fox devises a cunning plan: he claims to have received a message from the king summoning all animals to come and pay their respects. The rooster is eager to meet the king but is also wary of the fox's ulterior motives. Sensing the rooster's hesitation, the fox suggests that he crow loudly as they walk through the forest to signal their approach to the king. As they venture through the woods, the rooster crows boisterously, unaware that the fox is leading him into a trap. Suddenly, the fox seizes the rooster and reveals his true intention: to capture and devour him. The rooster's caution proves to be justified, and the fox's deception is exposed. The moral of the story is clear: we must be vigilant and exercise prudence, particularly when dealing with those who have a history of dishonesty or deceit. The fable serves as a timeless reminder that not everything we hear can be trusted, and that we must remain cautious and skeptical, even in the face of seemingly convincing arguments. I feel these concepts apply more than ever with the awareness of gaslighting and trusting your intuition in today's zeitgeist. Have you ever outsmarted a trickster? |
