A rebus is a visual puzzle, images standing in for words, meant to be decoded. In this case: Eye. Door. Ewe. “I adore you.”
The seal may be used plain, where its sculptural simplicity speaks for itself, or painted. I often paint the eye by hand, a slow, meditative process that brings the seal fully to life. When done well, the gaze appears to follow you, an effect that feels intimate and watchful.
It is especially suited for Valentine’s letters and correspondence where affection is best offered with wit and play.
