The Persephone Penny Pawn is a small Étui created to hold a single Hastings Penny. Each comes with the exclusive Persephone Penny, a design available only with the Pawn and not offered separately.

The two sides of the Penny tell the story of Persephone through the two worlds she inhabits.

On one side is the world above: daffodils and a butterfly, symbols of spring, emergence and return. It is the realm of Demeter, flowers and the earth coming back to life.

Turn the Penny over and we descend. A snake coils around a pomegranate, an image of the Underworld, transformation and the knowledge acquired through descent. The composition is somewhat reminiscent of the ancient Orphic Egg, but reimagined for Persephone: not a serpent encircling the cosmic egg from which life emerges, but a serpent embracing the fruit that binds her to the world below.

Together, the two sides hold the essential tension of Persephone's myth: descent and return, darkness and bloom, innocence and knowledge, the world above and the riches beneath it.

The Pawn itself becomes a tiny vessel for that duality. Open it to reveal the Penny within. Turn the Penny over and the world changes.

Neither side tells the whole story without the other.
