The Second Generation Étui (Helix Edition)
- Unit price
- /per
Pre-order, shipping approximately January 20th
The Second Edition Hastings Étui, known as the Helix Étui, is now available for pre-order. This edition takes its name from the helix cut into the metal handle, a form chosen with intention.
The helix represents growth without repetition. Unlike a circle, which returns to the same point, a helix moves forward while remaining rooted in its origin. Each turn echoes the last at a higher elevation. It is a symbol of inheritance, evolution, and refinement over time, not rupture or replacement.
The cutouts in the Étui allow the pennies inside to be partially visible and give the object a subtle, bell-like resonance when pennies are placed within. As the Étui is handled, it reveals a shifting diamond pattern through the openings, creating a sense of upward motion. The images shown reflect the final prototype. The first editions to ship may feature slightly wider openings, allowing the pennies to be seen more clearly.
A total of 249 Helix Étuis will be made. Only 50 are available for this initial pre-order.
Each Étui comes with three newly designed pennies.
Penny One
Heads
This seal centers on three bound keys, symbols of thresholds, stewardship, and trust. Keys do not force entry, they fit, suggesting that what is meant for us already has a place prepared. Three keys together imply that no single faculty is sufficient on its own. Intellect, intuition, and devotion must act together. The inscription Claves intus sunt, “the keys are within,” affirms inward authority and authorship.
Tails
This seal depicts an oak tree, rooted and enduring. Oaks grow slowly and retain their essential form across centuries. The inscription cresce non cambia, “it grows, it does not change,” frames growth as deepening rather than reinvention. Pressed into wax, the seal affirms continuity and steadiness that remains faithful to its origin.
Penny Two
The Claire Penny
Inspired by a beloved patron, Claire McDonald, who wished for a pairing of a bee and a flower.
Heads
This seal bears a bee, long associated with industry, order, and the transformation of effort into sustenance. Bees create through steady labor rather than force or haste. The inscription Ex pulchritudine vita, “from beauty, life,” frames beauty as a generative principle, something from which vitality and meaning arise.
Tails
This seal features lily of the valley, associated with humility, renewal, and the return of happiness. Delicate in appearance yet resilient in habit, it blooms reliably after winter. The inscription return to happiness affirms renewal and the reappearance of joy.
Penny Three
Heads
This seal bears the inscription verba mea fiunt, “my words become.” Set without imagery, the phrase emphasizes language as action rather than ornament. Words shape memory, alter relationships, and carry consequence. Pressed into wax, the seal marks intention and the power of writing to take form.
Tails
This seal depicts a greyhound carrying a sealed letter, an image historically associated with fidelity, friendship, and speed. The greyhound delivers what is precious with care and purpose, standing for trust in both message and messenger.
